Kairat will be eight (8) months old on August 3rd. To say I am stunned that he is so young is an understatement! While “young as possible” is absolutely what I wanted, “young” seems to generally be in the 9-12 month range. I’m not complaining, just a tad lost! He’s doing a good job of training this mom-to-be though. The baby clothes I brought are a little too big, but in a fit of optimism, I threw in some true “baby” toys at the last minute. Absolutely perfect. And bless
He’s a charmer. Really loves the pretty girls and just lights up smiling and laughing when someone he recognizes comes in the room. This is Sonniya, one of my driver's beautiful daughters.
Kairat is his Kazakh name and is pronounced kye (rhymes with high) rot. Not rat. ;) I call him Little Carrot. Or my giant karat, as in the largest, most perfect diamond in the universe! I’ve been so focused on ensuring his health is okay, that I have not yet figured out what his new name will be. The name that has been my favorite is still in the running, but I’m not quite sure it fits him.
I’ll provide the details of the selection process soon, but my first meeting with Little Carrot was memorable. They brought him in and he was smiling and laughing. I picked him up, set him on my lap, and he promptly anointed me with hot, kefir-ish (think buttermilk) reeking spit up. Lots of it. Not just a little dribble, but a full-on spew. I don’t remember ever being spit up on. I’m sure I would remember that smell, let me tell you. The room was hot and steamy and I was trying, unsuccessfully, not to gag. Still hoping no one saw me. I’m sure it was only the beginning of the lovely fluids and odors that he will share with me.
I have a ton to tell you and will catch you up with the events to date within the next few days. Meanwhile, know that I’m thrilled, overwhelmed, terrified, teary-eyed one second, and smiling from ear to ear the next. This little guy is my dream come true.

Wow Alysa! I'm so glad I checked from work this morning. He's gorgeous! I love those dimples. He was worth the wait, wasn't he? You'll get LOTS of developmental milestones with this one. Enjoy him, and try to stay cool. I'm looking forward to more updates and pix!

I had a similar spit up story on that first day. Ugh, ugh!!! I can totally empathize.
Again, congratulations! I can't wait to hear the rest of the details of the day you met him, and what you will choose for his new name.
Oh, Alysa! He looks like such a happy little guy. And that's when he's still IN the orphanage. Congratulations!

I will never forget seeing you meet him that first day. It was a wild whirlwind for you -- stinky spit-up and all. I've also enjoyed watching you fall in love with your son-to-be. Our time shared here together has been very special to me. You are a wonderful woman and you are going to be an even more wonderful mom!
Kairat, you are one lucky little giggly boy with a smile that lights up the room. Milo says "hi!"
Love,
Regina
CONGRATULATIONS!!! WOOHOO!!! We are so happy for you and for Kairat! He is beautiful!
Look at that smile, those teeth, those dimples. I am totally in love with him from afar, I can only imagine how you feel. Congratulations. I can't wait to hear about all of your adventures with your SON! :)
Both my boys spit up all over me all of the time. I had to put away all my dark colored clothes for awhile. They grow out of it before you know it and the smell almost won't be noticeable to you.
I am so thrilled for you and have checked your blog a minimum of 5 times a day for updates and this one has me grinning ear to ear.
Heather

What a handsome, happy little guy. We are so thrilled that you found each other!! Doug and I stood at the computer just reading and smiling in awe. The medicals are behind you and everything is falling into place.
You must be walking on air.

Oh my heavens is he ever a cutie! His cheeks are as big as Z's and he has the best dimples to match! :) I am SO glad to hear that all is well with your little carrot 'karat' and that his health has checked out. It is overwhelming to say the least when you hear the list of things on the Russian medicals, but in the end your heart seems to sneak in and fall in love even without that final a-ok from the doctors. So glad to see that you have met your son!
Christy
