A family isn't determined by who is or isn't in it, or how it came to be, but by the bond that is created by the love that is shared.

Quick Morning Update
We made it through our first night together! He started to settle down about 10:30, so I turned off the lights in the living room and held him for awhile. Then changed into our jammies (and the Halo sleepslack) and moved to the bed. He was still awake, but definitely going down. I've got big square pillows lining one side of the bed, he's in the middle third, and I've got the other third. He twists and turns and squirms and squawks and squeaks. This kid can find and insert his pacifier at all hours with his eyes closed. When he popped it in his mouth about midnight and the hands came up looking for the bottle, I decided we won't cut that out of the schedule quite yet. He wolfed it down and went right back to sleep, after I changed his sopping leaking diaper. Awake again at 5ish. Had another bottle at 6. Then had explosive diarrhea. (I knew this was going to happen given we have the wrong food in the house, a situation I have to correct today.) Soaked through everything faster than I could get to the diaper and the clothes off. By the time he was cleaned up and changed, he was wide awake. He was content to go back to bed, but was babbling, kicking, and gazing at me (weird and cool being stared at in the dark by a baby), then decided to climb all over me, finally falling asleep again on my shoulder. I LOVE that he likes to be held. He is loving it more than he did when we started bonding.
He's conked out now, while I boil water to wash dishes, donned a pair of plastic gloves (PAP tip!) and rinsed poop out of the clothes in the tub enough to be able to put them in the washer. Good thing about the washing machines here is that they heat their own water. Nope, still no hot water. I am covered in formula, spit up, drool, poop, and pee, and only got a few hours of sleep. Desperately need a shower. Definitely need more clothes for the both of us at this rate. Given no heat and not so warm days, the laundry takes awhile to dry!
Since crawling is his favorite thing to do, I cannot put him down on the bed until he is fast asleep. I want a crib. I need a crib. He's used to his crib. But, no crib. Almaty for sure (they have cribs in the apartments), the sooner the better.
He was such a happy guy last night. Playtime at 10pm is much more fun than during the day apparently. He is pushing up with his legs now when he is on all fours (I keep thinking in terms of his "hind legs" which has my fellow pet parents laughing at me) and is trying to stand. When he pulls himself up and is cruising on the sofa, he's starting to lift those legs in an attempt to climb. He also showed me his raspberry blowing skills! First time I've seen that one! Very cute. Parts of me just want him to slow down and not be making such speedy progress! I know these baby days are numbered.

well aren't you getting "indocrinated" right away!
I'm so glad he likes to snuggle, and i hope you get the "runs" under control while your boy will soon be RUNNING AROUND it sounds like!
well, you can take a cold shower and be quick about it. :)
I took one cold shower and it was a quickie!
we won't have a crib in Almaty, but we have a playpen here. I have to check to see if we stay in a hotel, if we'll have a crib there, rather than an apt, cuz i know the apts don't have them (at least I do not think so , talking to the other families)
Leeza is super squirmy so i would be scared of her in bed, but i guess between Joe and I would be safe enough if necessary.
You are a true mom now..poop and all. :)
Love ya!
Congratulations for making through the first night! Hopefully you will get to Almaty and a crib soon. I love reading your entries, he sounds like such a precious, fun boy.

Congratulations. We are all so excited for you. Beware the diarrhea. I call it the stress diarrhea. It has come and gone (finally) over the months. It was especially bad on the plane home.
It appears without warning and very dramatically whenever something is overwhelming Saiyora.
I heard many stories of poop horror on the plane and was not close to being prepared. That baby house schedule is a challenge too. Probably the biggest issue for us since coming home. Not realistic for a parent but that routine represents all the security and trust they have in the world and how it is supposed to work. Can you believe that you have him all to yourself now and can just enjoy him without feeling like you are in a fishbowl or have to ask permission. I just get tears remembering that moment. Please call anytime if you need support. Lesley
So, you are covered in spit up, drool, poop, pee, sleep deprived and haven't had a chance to take a shower. Congratulations, you are officially a parent :)
It is quite an adjustment, isn't it??? :-)
A tip for the diaper issues -- Go easy on his milk, especially if you are using a new brand. I read on Kelly and Sne's blog that 90% of Asians have lactose intolerance. I suspected this with Milo and when I drastically reduced his milk intake a month ago it made a world of difference. He didn't care much for it anyway. I still give him some soy milk and he will take a few sips of that.
I hope they turn the heat on really soon -- or you get to Almaty in a jiffy. Brrrr....
That is so sweet that he will fall asleep on you in the bed. Miras wouldn't do that at first - I guess it was just too exciting to be in bed with Mom and Dad. I know it seems hard right now, but you'll get hot water and find your groove. And you just might miss the bonding time sleeping together in bed. It sounds like he's adjusting pretty well too!
Welcome to motherhood! I'll have to get back to you on how old the child has to be before you're not covered in stuff, and you don't go to bed exhausted. :-) But it's so worth it!
Just read Regina's comment- Gigi doesn't do well on cow milk (dairy) either. We switched her to Goat milk and it's awesome! It's a lot closer to breast milk so it's much gentler on the system.
I'm so glad you had a successful first night. I can't imagine having a baby by myself with no hot water. You are a STRONG woman! :-)
Big Night - Night #1 of the rest of your life! :)
Congratulations, sounds like you are a natural, poopy jammies and all!
Christy :)
